Produce Distribution
Fresh produce is both vital to the health of the members of our community, and also one of the most cost prohibitive items. To ensure hungry families are able to obtain the fresh fruits and vegetables they need, Second Harvest Food Bank distributes produce through our hunger relief organizations in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Truckloads of produce are brought directly to these organizations, which are located in the heart of the communities we serve. In 2009, the Food Bank distributed over 2.3 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables to hungry members of our community.
Making it Possible
The produce is made available through The Agricultural Clearance Program, which leverages funds to procure surplus production of fresh fruits and vegetables from Ohio farmers. The program is funded through the state of Ohio through a partnership with the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks. This is also made possible by our Ohio state legislators.
