Dominion and the Dominion Foundation awarded $10,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley to support the BackPack Program. This grant is part of Dominion’s $1 million commitment to “critical community needs” that specifically support increasing food securities.
The BackPack Program is a national program of Feeding America, the nation's leading domestic hunger-relief charity and is administered by member food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. The BackPack Program is designed to fill the gaps when other resources for food are unavailable, such as on weekends. Locally, the Food Bank is operating the BackPack Program in nine local schools, distributing 709 bags each Friday during the school year.
“We are grateful to Dominion and the Dominion Foundation for their continued support,” said Michael Iberis, executive director, Second Harvest Food Bank. “Fifty-three percent of students in the Mahoning Valley are eligible for free and reduced priced meals at school. The BackPack Program fills the gap on the weekend when children do not have access to school meal programs,” Iberis added.
