Food Bank Programs

As a storehouse for large quantities of donated food, the main work of the Food Bank is to distribute this food to church pantries, homeless shelters and soup kitchens, shelters for battered women and after-school programs in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

The Food Bank also implements programs to further meet the needs of hungry people in our community.

School Pantry

The School Pantry Program, a program of Feeding America, is designed to alleviate child hunger by increasing food access for school children and their families. School-based food pantries may have a permanent residence within a school or may operate through a mobile distribution where food is brought to the school and distributed each month. Within a safe environment, students have discrete access to food daily or weekly. Children may also take bags of food home for the weekends. The School Pantry offers shelf-stable items, such as cereal, mac and cheese, soups, crackers, fruit cups, and microwavable meals, to take and consume at home.

The Food Bank partners with 41 schools in the tri-county area to provide food through the School Pantry Program, in partnership with such organizations as United Way of Trumbull County and the Boardman Lions Club. In 2019, students received food from the pantry nearly 30,000 times. The Food Bank is working with more schools to establish this program. Mobile Pantry

Began in 2010 with support from the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, the Mobile Pantry Program is specifically designed to get food to individuals and families who live in underserved rural areas or do not currently have access to one of the Food Bank’s member agencies. Currently, the Mahoning Mobile Pantry with the support of the United Way of Youngstown and Mahoning County serves people in need in Goshen.

In April 2012, the Food Bank began operating mobile pantry in Mecca Township in Trumbull County with a Nourishing Our Community grant from the ConAgra Foods Foundation.

In September 2012, the Food Bank began operating a mobile pantry in Hanoverton in Columbiana County with a Community Improvement Grant from the Governor's Office of Appalachia.

Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)

Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley has been selected as a Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) Partner to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. CSFP is a federally funded program designed to improve the health of low-income senior citizens age 60+ and whose household income is 130% or less of the federal poverty guidelines by providing a supplemental box of food.The food provided through this program is a good source of nutrients that are often lacking from the diets of the elderly. The Food Bank has been awarded 750 slots for the CSFP program, which means that an additional 700 senior citizens in the Mahoning Valley will be able to receive the food assistance they need.
